2011-2012
Dear Parents,
The following information is essential for you and your fifth grader. Please use this handout to answer any questions that you have about our classroom.
Arrival and Dismissals
The bell rings at 8:45 for students to enter the class. They enter and start on a morning work activity. The late bell rings at 9:15. The students will need to check in at the front office after the bell. Dismissals start at 3:45. Please encourage students to attend school each day.
Absences and Sick Notes
If your child is absent from school please send a note giving the reason and date of absence. An email or doctor’s note will be accepted as well. If your child is absent they have 3 days to turn in missed work.
Classroom Rules
Our class motto is, respect. We only have 3 classroom rules and they are; to Respect Yourself, Respect Others, and Respect the Environment. I strongly enforce these 3 rules to create and ensure an environment which is safe and comfortable for everyone. We follow the school wide SOAR philosophy each day as well.
Daily and Weekly Communication
Our classroom website (www.bcesjones5.weebly.com ) will be my main way to communicate weekly news and information. If you have a personal question, transportation change or absent note, please email me ([email protected]). Please check the weebly weekly, as major homework assignments and announcements are posted weekly. Another great way to stay in contact is the homework agenda. I sign these each afternoon, please sign them as well. This lets me know that you are aware of the homework assigned. I also may write quick reminders or notes inside. Feel free to do the same!
Snacks/Birthday Celebrations
We have snack each morning around 10:30. Please be sure to send a healthy snack! Please email me in the event of a birthday celebration. We can coordinate details that best fit our classroom schedule. Please remember that all items need to be store bought and peanut free.
Homework
Homework is given Monday thru Thursday. Each night students should read 30 minutes (at least). Each week the students will have new spelling list. The spelling homework will be posted on the weebly. Math homework will also be given each night. Students will also be responsible for completing a reading response journal entry each week. The rubric for the reading response will be given out 1 time to each student and posted on the weebly. They will have one week to complete the journal entry. Each Wednesday, the students also will need to complete a current event summary called “What’s Happenin’ Wednesday?”. Please check the weebly for major homework assignments.
Assessments
Each Friday students will be tested on the week’s spelling/vocabulary words. They will also have a quick quiz each Friday assessing the math objectives taught that particular week. This year students will also take Benchmark test throughout the year
Specials
Our specials time is 2:40-3:30. Our specials schedule changes every three weeks. Be sure to check the weebly for changes. 4 times this year, students will have the opportunity to take a chosen elective. Please sign up for your child’s electives on the weebly.
Human Growth and Development
As a part of the Fifth Grade Curriculum, each student will be given the option to participate in Human Growth and Development Education. Permission slips will be sent home during the spring semester a few weeks before the sessions begin. All information presented to the students will be available for parent viewing as well.
Conferences and Report Cards
Each student is required to have 2 Parent-Teacher conferences throughout the year. I will be holding conferences the first week of the September track out. I will post the times available on the weebly mid-August. Report cards will come home at the end of each quarter. If you have concerns about your child during any part of the year and would like to have a conference please feel free to email me or send a note giving date requested and concern.
